Gavin Newsom on his trip to El Salvador in April 2019. Carrillo’s family had immigrated from El Salvador when she was young. The governor’s trip was timed with the on-going humanitarian crisis at the border. Carrillo joined Insight host Beth Ruyak by phone during the trip to talk about California’s relationship with El Salvador, why people want to come to the U.S., her training as a journalist and how she entered government service.
