On Monday, Major League Soccer executives are coming to Sacramento to make a major announcement: that the city will be awarded an expansion franchise. That will make Sacramento the 29th MLS team, with the goal of the stadium and season opening in 2022. This has been in the planning stages for years.
Sacramento FC brought in Ron Burkle, a billionaire investor, who is also the majority owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, to help bolster the finances. And, it appears, everything is now in place now to move forward. The Sacramento FC soccer team has planned a big block party on Capitol Mall on Monday to celebrate the news.
The addition of a new professional team and a 20,000 seat stadium in the heart of downtown Sacramento has many positives and also many challenges. Joining Insight to discuss the future of downtown Sacramento and the impact the new MLS team will have on the city are two people involved in the growth and prosperity of the region: Amanda Blackwood, CEO of Sacramento Metro Chamber and Michael Ault, Executive Director of Downtown Sacramento Partnership.
