Different counties have different rules for voter registration. On Insight today, we’ll check in on those rules with representatives from Sacramento, Nevada, Yolo and Placer counties. 

California’s Primary is March 3 — not in June this year — but you’ll have to be registered by Feb. 18 to be eligible to vote. If you’re registered but you have changed your name or political party, you’ll have to re-register. If you were registered as “No Party Preference” and want to vote in the presidential primary, you’ll have to request a specific ballot.

The voting rules differ by county, so we’ll sample rules across the region, starting with Sacramento County Registrar of Voters Courtney Bailey-Kanelos. Then YubaNet Editor and Co-founder Pascale Fusshoeller in Nevada County, Placer County Elections Manager Philip Chantri and Yolo County Chief Deputy Clerk-recorder-Assessor Jeffrey Barry.
