Ladysmith Black Mambazo has a unique sound. You know it immediately when you hear it. That signature sound has brought peace and joy to countless audiences, starting in the group’s native South Africa.
You might know Ladysmith from Paul Simon’s album "Graceland," where they sang together on the songs "Homeless" and "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes." That 1986 album brought Ladysmith international attention and acclaim.
Earlier this week, its founder Joseph Shabalala, died. In 2014, one of the original members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Albert Mazibuku, came to the Insight studio along with longtime group manager Mitch Goldstein. In re-visiting this interview, we’re paying tribute to Shabalala. You can find information about his funeral here.
