John O’Brien came from a poor family, growing up in tenements in Harlem in New York City. He was aware of poverty and injustice from an early age. O’Brien became an activist at age 13, in 1962, during the Civil Rights movement. As a teenager, he also helped register voters in Alabama and Mississippi.
O’Brien was just 20 when the Stonewall Rebellion took place. After Stonewall, he was one of the organizers of the First Annual Pride March in 1970 and has been an activist in many social justice causes throughout his life. O’Brien was invited to Davis High School by history teacher, Kevin Williams, to speak to his class and will also give a free public lecture.
