Los Rios Chancellor Summer school starts at Los Rios Community Colleges Monday and if you’re a student, you may be asking yourself why the district hasn’t used those Proposition 30 funds to restore courses cut during the recession. The short answer is, they spent a good amount of money to avoid cutting classes during statewide budget reductions. To get the bigger picture, we’re speaking with Chancellor of Los Rios Community College District Brian King about plans to restore courses in the district, and whether it’s still possible to get in and out of the state’s second largest community college district in two years.

 

 

"Trek for a Cure" What would you do if you had a rare type of blood cancer that made you easily fatigued? Hike a couple hundred miles if you’re Annette DeBow. "Trek for a Cure" is DeBow’s method for recruiting people to sponsor research of her rare type of cancer, called as a group, myeloproliferative neoplasms. The 190 mile hike from Meek’s Bay in Tahoe to Tuolomne Meadows starts July 14, but "Trek for a Cure" will begin even earlier with a benefit concert featuring Emily Wells, who has been heard on "All Songs Considered" and in other NPR shows. The concert is Saturday, June 15 at Plainfield Station in Davis. Ahead of the concert, we’re speaking with DeBow and her doctor, Dr. Jason Gotlib, about MPN cancers and the relevant research being done at the Stanford Cancer Center.

 

 

Rose Vermazen Update Last year, we told you the story of a homeschooled 15-year-old dancer from Davis, Calif., who dreamt of dancing at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow since she was nine. The dream came true when last summer when Rose Vermazen was invited to train at the Academy in Moscow. She started in Fall 2012 and now she's back from studying, one year later. We'll talk with her about her experiences in Russa.

 

 

"Fire and Water" Betsy Graziani Fasbinder joins us to discuss her debut novel "Fire and Water," which is a complex tale of mental illness and its effects on family members and loved ones set in San Francisco. We'll also take a look at the book's interesting road to publication - the novel was published this March by She Writes Press, a new "indie" publishing house in Berkeley.
