If you’ve ever seen a cartoon featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy you’ve heard the music of Vince Guaraldi. His deceptively simple, instantly captivating tunes score the Peanuts cartoons and have become iconic in the five decades since the premier of A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965. Sacramento jazz pianist Jim Martinez has devoted a good chunk of his career to capturing the essence of Guaraldi’s music in his original works. He’s also performed and recorded covers of the songs that made Guaraldi as recognizable as Bach or Beethoven. Martinez is releasing a new album “Good Grief! It's Still Jim Martinez: A Tribute to Guaraldi, Schulz and Peanuts” Sunday at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. He joins us ahead of the concert to talk about the music.
