Sacramento State Becomes Most Sustainable CSU Campus

Sacramento State this year is being noticed for its years-long efforts to make the campus more sustainable.

It received a prestigious gold rating by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), a title only 650 other colleges and universities across six continents share.

With a rating of 78.12 out of 100, it is roughly 8 percent away from the one school with a platinum rating, the highest possible rating.

Sustainability Manager Ryan Todd and Recycling Coordinator Joey Martinez talk about the ongoing struggle to change the culture of the campus to encourage more people to think green.

Todd says the reason for the gold rating comes from Sac State's program being broad, including research in food waste, landscape waste, aquaponics and more.

The sustainability program also received two best practices awards from the California Higher Education Sustainability Conference in Fullerton last week. The conference includes all CSUs, UCs and most private and community colleges.

Most recently, Sac State won an $80,000 grant to create an on-campus composting site for food and landscape waste.
