A group of pan-African students at UCLA joined together 50 years ago to create a holiday that celebrates unity and culture of African communities.
Created in the aftermath of the Watts riots in Los Angeles, Kwanzaa is a seven-day holiday that is now a multi-cultural celebration around the globe.
Michael Harris is the coordinator for the California State Capitol Kwanzaa Celebration. He explains the holiday’s roots and what’s planned at the capitol this year.
