A Northern California writer who graduated from University of the Pacific in Stockton releases her second novel Tuesday. “The Tsarina’s Legacy” builds on the story author Jennifer Laam wove in her debut novel, “The Secret Daughter of the Tsar.” In that first novel, Laam imagined an alternate history for the tragic Romanov family, who ruled Russia until 1917 and were executed by Bolshevik troops in 1918. In Laam’s novel, a secret daughter was smuggled out of Russia before the revolution.

“The Tsarina’s Legacy” continues the story of the lost heiress to the Romanov throne, with a young American laying claim to her birthright and taking on a project started 200 hundred years earlier by Empress Catherine. Today on Insight, we’ll meet Jennifer Laam, talk with her about her work and find out what drew her to the Russian and the Romanov family in the first place.
