Sacramento, CA
There are some impressive new releases in the jazz world this week.
Sound Advice, hosted by Jazz Music Director Gary Vercelli, previews songs from Chick Corea’s new album “The Musician” and “Open Invitation” by the American River College Vocal Ensemble.
Chick Corea - "Overture" - The Musician
As a pianist and composer, Chick Corea has defined the sound of surprise in jazz for half a century.
In the fall of 2011, Corea celebrated his 70th birthday by performing 48 shows over the course of one month at the Blue Note in NYC with 10 different bands and 27 musicians, including Miles Davis alumni Herbie Hancock, Gary Bartz, Jack DeJohnette, and John McLaughlin.
He also reunited with Stanley Clarke and Lenny White, working in both electric and acoustic environments.
The 48 shows with 10 different bands resulted in a 20-song, three-CD box set issued on Concord along with a companion DVD documentary in the “Deluxe Edition.”
Here we capture one of Chick’s classically-inspired compositions, “Overture,” featuring Gary Burton on vibes with the Harlem String Quartet.
The depth and versatility of Armando Antonio Chick Corea continue to astound all those who listen.
American River College Ensemble - "Early Autumn" - Open Invitation
This contemporary jazz vocal ensemble under the direction of Dr. Art Lapierre has won numerous awards from Down Beat magazine and music competitions throughout the country. They have upcoming performances at The Next Generation Monterey Jazz Festival on April 2 and a spring concert at A.R.C. on Wednesday, May 10.
“Early Autumn” was a hit for Woody Herman’s band way back in 1948. It is handled here with finesse by Megan Ugarte. The group’s sound is professional and features beautiful harmonies. Dr. Joe Gilman is featured on piano.
Charlie Watts/Danish Radio Big Band - "Satisfaction" - Recorded Live
Although known for his work with The Rolling Stones, Charlie Watts has always been an admirer of jazz artists. He holds legendary drummer Elvin Jones in high esteem and dedicates a composition to him on this collection.
This project is the brainchild of trumpeter Gerard Presencer. We’ll enjoy his flugelhorn solo on a jazzed up version of “Satisfaction.”
Matt Otto with Ensemble Iberica - "Elm" - Iberica
Tenor saxophonist Matt Otto shines as a composer of lush contemplative work. He is paired with a Kansas City-based chamber group dedicated to the music of Spain and Portugal.
This is a rich soundscape for the imagination that pairs Otto’s probing saxophone with the guitars and world music
