That ban led to the emergence of “reusable” plastic bags, which are not recyclable, and California saw a rise in plastic bag waste by nearly 50 percent. Gov. Newsom recently signed a new plastic bag ban to address it. Zoe Heller is the director of CalRecycle, the state agency that oversees recycling. She’ll explain the effect of the new ban, as well as discuss what is actually recyclable when you throw them in those blue bins.
