Sacramento, CA
New housing like the Warehouse Artists Lofts, as well as news shops and restaurants are drawing even more people to the bustling R Street Corridor. And a new portable art project - PORTAL Sacramento - is looking to capitalize on that renewed energy and provide a space for young people in the community to share their ideas and vision for the future of Sacramento. Located on a sidewalk in front of the old Crystal Ice Factory - soon to be redeveloped into its own space for local businesses - PORTAL is the vision of Kimberly Garza and Tre Borden. The mirrored three-sided box illuminated with hundreds of LED lights is meant to represent an actual portal through time and space. It's up to the people using the PORTAL - and the urban space around it - to determine what that time and space represent. One night a red carpet led the way through the PORTAL, while nattily dressed twenty-somethings posed with friends for photos. A DJ played music nearby and there was even a food truck and a pop-up vintage store. The event was hosted by a local stylist and included Sacramento fashion bloggers who talked about their work and why fashion in the city is important. Just last week, Sacramento Steps Forward hosted an event at PORTAL that allowed participants to experience homelessness for themselves through the guidance of formerly homeless people. As the PORTAL is moved from R Street to the TBD Fest happening in West Sacramento this weekend, we'll talk with Garza and Borden about the vision behind PORTAL, what they've learned about Sacramento through it and what they plan to do with it in the future.
