Over 2 million Americans have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade and increasing numbers are returning home. As these vets struggle to transition back into civilian life many will end up in the criminal justice system. In response to this alarming fact, Sacramento County started a pilot program this summer that diverts eligible veterans into treatment programs with more options than the county’s regular criminal justice system, including a reduction of charges. Joining us to explain the need and target population of the Veteran’s Treatment Court are some of the key players.
